INTACCT ACCOUNTING SOFTWARE AND ERP SOFTWARE REVIEW

crm SUMMARY

Founded in 1999, Intacct is a manufacturer of on-demand financial management and accounting software applications. The company's hosted software applications manage financial, supply chain, and professional services information. The Intacct on-demand business software system includes accounting software, contract management, revenue recognition, inventory, purchasing, vendor management, project management, payroll, and financial reporting applications, all of which is delivered over the Web via Software as a Service. The company is headquartered in San Jose, California and operates offshore development offices in Bangalore, India.

crm STRENGTHS

Strengths for the Intacct ERP and accounting software as a service solution include the following:

  • Market share presence. As of late 2008, Intacct claimed a total of 2,000 customers, with approximately 1,000 customers using the company's multi-subsidiary and multi-currency software.
  • SMB focus. Like its direct competitor NetSuite, Intacct best serves small business companies whom are often graduating from QuickBooks or automating their accounting software systems for the first time.
  • Good accounting software ease of use and intuitive navigation throughout the application. The accounting software is traditionally focused, modularly based and very simple to grasp for any person with prior accounting systems experience.
  • Deep accounting functionality. The accounting software suite is impressive in terms of both breadth and depth of functionality.
  • Fairly straight-forward software customization. The software modification tools are superior to rival NetSuite in terms of ease of use and broad based capability.
  • A growing business partner program. For the end of Intacct's 2008 fiscal year, the company's business partner channel grew just over 160 percent compared to the prior year. Intacct has demonstrated a strong desire to enlist CPAs and accounting firms as business partners.

crm WEAKNESSES

Weaknesses among the Intacct ERP software as a service solution includes the following:

  • Company recognition. Comparable to its on-demand ERP software rival Aplicor, Intacct is regarded as a credible entity by those familiar with the company, however, many outside the ERP software industry and not familiar with Intacct.
  • Missing CRM software. Intacct has chosen not to offer customer relationship management (CRM) software which is show-stopper for many SMB companies who desire a single integrated system over multiple loosely integrated applications. Intacct does belong the Salesforce.com AppExchange third party directory, however, the accounting software and CRM software integration is surface level and as industry pundit Dennis Howlett reports, "the SFDC (salesforce.com) channel hasn't exactly proved a happy hunting ground for add on vendors." While Salesforce.com continues to boast the success of AppExchange and Force.com, many analysts tell a far different story which in the end impedes progress for partner companies such as Intacct.
  • Company instability. Intacct has plowed through four CEO's in the last five years. Of course each CEO has brought with him a management team and a new business strategy.
  • Financial viability. Intacct is a private company and does not disclose financial reporting. However, the company has received approximately $80 million in venture funding (largely from ventures Emergence Capital, Sigma Partners and Sutter Hill Ventures). While the venture funding amount is quite large, the vast majority of that money is gone and the company remains unprofitable. Whether the company can reach profitability before venture funding runs out remains an unknown.
  • Lack of application breadth. As with most of the on-demand accounting software solutions, Intacct is either missing or very light in the business application areas of manufacturing software, supply chain management software and human resources software.
  • No on premise delivery delivery option. Intacct only servers the software as a service market and does not offer an on-premise option.

crm KEY COMPETITORS

Intacct's primary competitors are hosted ERP software providers NetSuite and Aplicor.

Other competitors include Microsoft Dynamics, Sage MAS and QuickBooks.

crm ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Intacct has a relatively short history of offering a hosted professional services automation (PSA) solution via an OEM arrangement with partner OpenAir. However, following OpenAir's acquisition by rival NetSuite in 2008, the continued viability of this solution from Intacct remains less clear.
